If your baby slides shallow after starting with a deep latch, it might be a sign of underlying oral function challenges. Sometimes positioning alone isn’t enough to keep the latch deep. If you're still seeing sliding even after adjusting positioning, it’s worth working with a lactation consultant or feeding professional who can assess your baby’s oral function more closely.
The fix is actually the same as with slurping—get your nipple out of the way until your baby opens wide, then help them come forward into the latch.
The key is making sure their bottom lip is positioned below your nipple before they close. That way, when they bite or clamp down, they’re closing over more breast tissue—not your nipple.

Hi! I’m Avery—an IBCLC and educator with over twenty-five years of experience, and I'm so glad you're here. I started this blog because I know how overwhelming it can feel when feeding doesn’t go the way it’s “supposed to.”
After working with hundreds (and hundreds) of families, I wanted a space to share what actually works—clearly, compassionately, and without all the noise.
